How Smart
Wednesday 31 May 2006, The Watershed
Thanks to everyone who joined us for this fantastic event exploring design and technology in the world of fashion, in collaboration with Watershed's monthly Interdisciplinary Network. Our two speakers for the evening were David Hieatt, co-founder of ultra-cool clothing company Howies and Sharon Baurley, an AHRC fellow at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design.
The event was quick to sell out, so apologies to those who didn’t manage to get tickets, hopefully we’ll see you at our next event in September. Read more...
David Hieatt, discussed his award-winning clothing company and how they use both old and new technology in the production of their clothes (one jacket uses the same waterproof, breathable Ventile material that Spitfire pilots wore 50 years ago). With sound green principles, Howies is based on the belief that if isn't fun then it's probably not worth doing, and has built its reputation by working with the best illustrators and designers to produce high quality, low impact clothing. On 31 May and 1 June, Watershed hosted Communication-Wear, Sharon Baurley's cutting-edge research project with HP Labs and Vodafone, which integrates mobile phone technology and smart textiles into items of clothing, and investigates whether clothes can be used as tools for emotional communication. Sharon kindly showcased these garments at our event and discussed the problems that arise when trying to integrate fashion with new technologies. Visit website…
