Do you love Design?

We're looking for people who love design to talk about it for 5 minutes at We Love Design, our first event of Five Days of Design.
What makes design professionals tick? What makes them grin or grimace? Where do they find inspiration in their daily lives?
We Love Design is your opportunity to join us for an offbeat evening, celebrating our passion for design.
Local designers share five-minute talks, explaining why they love design and what gets their juices flowing. So join us for a drink and to hear and watch their (possibly) weird and wonderful interpretations of the subject.
Email us to talk about your love or design or to book a place - hello@wedesignforum.co.uk

Ink-Dot announce 6th design exhibition 'Resolution'

Ink-dot, a platform for local independent designers, hosts their 6th annual exhibition ‘Resolution’ in The Glass Room, at the Colston hall, this December.
Bristol is home to hundreds of independent designers, who are scattered all over the city. Ink-dot brings these designers together creating an exciting and vibrant show that celebrates the talent hidden within the city.
If you are a designer looking to take part in the show, or a business looking to sponsor the exhibition, get in touch with the Ink-Dot team at contact@ink-dot.co.uk.
Ink-dot provides an opportunity for designers from all different backgrounds, illustration, film, animation and graphics a chance to exhibit their work within a group show. Over the last four years, they have had a series of successful poster exhibitions, in several locations all over Bristol. Each poster exhibition is initiated with a competition brief that is open to all, including students from UWE to professional Art directors. The contestants are all given a one-word title, 8 colours and image dimensions. The brief is intended to level out the playing field and challenge the designers to think outside the box. A panel of 5 guest judges are used to select designs, which are then curated into an exhibition held in The Glass Room, for all of Bristol to see.
Ink-dot’s website promotes all of the designers who have participated in one of their shows and a database of all the posters that they have ever exhibited. The website also provides a shop, where the public can buy a limited edition prints.
Previously exhibited designers: Lorenzo, Ben Steers, Adrian Barclay, Peskimo, Mr Mead, Ged Palmer, Chris Wright, Mr Royale, Genevieve Browne, Fred Swist and Iria Prol.

Smith & Milton in Bristol

Smith & Milton, the London-based branding company, has opened an integrated communications office in Bristol.
The acquisition of Document represents a significant step for the company, after 31 years of delivering effective brand design from London.
Smith & Milton want to take advantage of the business opportunities that Bristol offers, and beyond into South-West England, the Midlands and Wales. After collaborating with the Bristol team on a number of projects, the relationship has been made official. The new office will also add value to our current clients in the area by harnessing the best marketing and design talent available in the city for them to access.
The move also satisfies another client demand – as the importance of a consistent and aligned brand with its communications is becoming crucial.
The new office, simply called Smith & Milton Bristol, offers integrated communications services, web development, video production, internal communications and campaigns, also expanding on the more strategic branding and design work that London specialises in. Their current clients include AXA, Bristol Old Vic, Cheltenham Festivals and Watershed.
As Ben Mott, Business Director at Smith & Milton London explains: “Our aim is to ensure that the brand work we do in London is delivered through other media effectively and consistently by our team in Bristol. Then there are the added benefits of a long-term relationship and the further value that this joining brings.”
Howard Swift, Business Director at Smith & Milton Bristol adds: “We’re already working in tandem with London on a number of projects, and the benefit we can add to the clients through the uniting of brand and communications thinking is something few agencies can truly match.”
Howard Milton, Chairman and Founder of Smith & Milton says: “This is the completion of one of a number of ventures now in progress. Over the past 31 years we have established an enviable reputation for our single-minded approach to brand building. I believe we have made the necessary step to move the gaze of our expert brand knowledge into other areas that our clients require, with the sole purpose of delivering stronger, more influential and higher performing brands to the customer.”
Founded in 1980, Smith & Milton are recognised as one of the UK's leading brand identity design companies. The company’s experience has been gained from working with leading brand owners, including Warburtons, Legal & General, CBRE, AXA, Travelex, Asprey and the NHS.

Illuminate Bath 2012

Following on from a successful first festival last November, Illuminate Bath returns, from Wednesday 25 to Saturday 28 January, bringing beautiful and engaging projected artworks to the city centre. Banishing the gloom of January’s long evenings, this ‘festival of light’ will include seven original installations in public spaces, all of which will be completely free for the public to explore.
With something to captivate all ages, the festival will include work by international and local artists, alongside art created by Bath school children and Art & Design students from Bath Spa University.
The highlight of Illuminate Bath 2012 will undoubtedly be Clockwork City created by Greyworld, an artists’ collective which has created mesmerising public art works across the world. Greyworld has created work in London, Warsaw and Bangkok and is currently working on a special commission in St. Petersburg. For the Bath multi-venue installation, visitors will find that large keys have been mysteriously attached to street furniture such as bins and benches. When turned, the keys will trigger lights, projected images and sounds, magically bringing the dark street to life. http://www.greyworld.org
The other installations in the festival will include:
Catch Me Now by Tine Bech: Children, in particular, will love to chase this deceptively simple spotlight as it reacts to their movement and leads them on a merry dance. Danish artist, Tine Bech, combines electronics with location tracking technology and the environmental elements of urban spaces to create playful experiences for curious visitors. http://www.tinebech.com
New light installation by Alex Cotterell, Will Kendrick, Lumen and OCD: Bath’s most famous landmark, the Roman Baths, will be transformed for two nights into a colour-filled oasis by light projections onto the water of The Great Bath. As the steam rises into the cold January air, this promises to be a truly enchanting spectacle. The balcony area of the baths will open for the public to view the projected experience for free for two nights during the festival.
Heads, Bodies, Legs by Petra Freeman and St. Saviours Junior School: Bath based animator Petra Freeman and filmmaker Tim Rolt, collaborate with 50 children and staff from St. Saviours to make an interactive animated version of this traditional pencil and paper game.
Attracted to Light by Robert Fearns and students from Bath Spa University: Bath-based artist and filmmaker Robert Fearns, specialises in exploring how we see, experience and create urban spaces. Attracted to Light is inspired by the way humans use light to navigate through the night-time urban jungle. Like moths to a lamp, we too are drawn to the images and shadows created by numerous small light sources.
Live Drawing & Creative Writing: Illustrators and writers from Bath Spa University will create artworks live, projected onto the wall of the Pump Room, as the audience looks on.
Visit Illuminate Bath's website for further details.

52 weeks, 52 photographers

A weekly photo challenge is set by fifty-two accomplished photographers throughout the course of a year. Each week the 52 by 52 members interpret the photographer's challenge in whichever way they feel appropriate and submit a photo to the Flickr group.
The project aims to stretch its members creatively, encouraging experimentation in terms of approach as well as aesthetics. Community is an important aspect of 52 by 52 and the support of the group will be helpful to spur members on throughout the year.
Weekly challenge projects are nothing new for sure but what makes this one unique is the thought-provoking challenges set by a varied range of professional photographers who come from a wide range of photographic disciplines. It's a chance to gain an insight into how well-respected photographers approach their art as their challenges will often be reflective of their own practice.
The project started on the 1st of September 2011 and will run for a year - it'll be possible to join the project at any time during the 52 weeks. Visit the website for further information.

This is part of the INTERREG IVB Lively Cities (LICI) project to turn the street and small park in front of the majestic St Bartholomew’s Church into a successful and well-used space. The area is part of the wider regeneration of the London Road area of the city.
The pilot will be tested out this autumn, with the most successful features becoming permanent fixtures.
The commission involves a three stage selection process: pre-qualification, short-list of 5 proposals and invitation to tender of the 5 short-listed.
Five ideas will be shortlisted in March and the applicants asked to develop detailed proposals for a public exhibition at the end of April. A selection panel will choose the winner at the end of May. The public will have the chance to vote for their favourite via an exhibition in early May which will inform the final decision.
To help applicants better understand how the project area currently works as well as the concerns and aspirations of present and potential future users, the council has produced supporting documents that details information gathered via a series of consultation events and site assessment work carried out between July and December 2011.
For general, up to date information on the Brighton & Hove Lively Cities project please visit www.brightonhove.gov.uk/livelycities and http://www.facebook.com/livelycitiesbrighton.

The deadline for submissions is 29 February 2012, 5pm.
Please note that submissions entered after this date will not be evaluated, and all relevant material required to support your submission should be sent to the relevant contact.

Cycling to work just got very cool

We all know that the popularity of people cycling to work has increased over the years and our love affair with the bike looks set to continue. A love affair that has been beautifully documented in the The Work Cycle; the latest self-initiated project by leading Bristol digital production agency, Pixillion.
www.workcycle.com is a web-based celebration of the Work Cyclist and their Work Cycles. A project that showcases through stunning photography how the Work Cycle is being successfully integrated into our working lives. What’s fascinating is the level of impact the humble bike is having on shaping the workspaces that we journey to. The collection of work spaces currently being showcased on the Work Cycle is an eclectic mix; from top notch creative agency Poke London, to national bike retailer Evans Cycles.
The Work Cycle is an evolving project and Pixillion are calling for work cyclists to spread the word about the site, and if they’d like their work place to be featured on the Work Cycle, to get in touch.

Pixillion’s Creative Director Remco Merbis says, “We're into all types of bikes and depending on the mood, day, or weather you can expect to see Mountain Bikes, Cyclocross bikes, Road bikes, Commuters/Hybrids and at least one folding bike littered about the studio. We’re really excited about our latest project from the Pixillion labs and staggered by the high standard of photography that has been submitted so far. It’s quite obvious the bike will remain a truly symbolic and loved mode of transport for many years to come.”

We’re pedalling through a renaissance where it’s not just the scantily clad Lycra boys waxing lyrical about their set of wheels – everyone and anyone that’s rediscovered the joy of riding their bike is loving it all over again.

Designers really do Love Design

Monday night's first event for WEDF's Five Days of Design was a huge success.
More than one hundred local designers and lovers of design came together to celebrate why We Love Design at Spike Island's cafe .
We laughed, we (nearly) cried, we met new people, we drank beer, and we learnt how five million lives have been saved down to the re-design of a hypodermic needle, about where our friends and colleagues find their inspiration in everyday life and about what makes our designers tick.
